Information your emergency contact must have

An emergency contact is a person you nominate to be called when you find yourself the victim of a crime, in hospital, or in a precarious situation in which you need a family member or friend to be present. 

In the event that you are incapacitated, or unconscious, your emergency contact may need to answer questions on your behalf, so be sure that they are informed of certain things like your medical history and certain parts of your lifestyle.

This is why it is important that your emergency contact is someone who you can trust with your life, literally. 

The Location of Your Legal Documents, Insurance Policies and Last Will and Testament

It may be a difficult discussion to have, but your emergency contact needs to know where to find important documents. Besides your will and policies, give them access to your birth and marriage certificates, deeds, titles, powers of attorney documents, healthcare directives, funeral planning documents and whatever else is relevant to you and your estate.  

Allergies and Blood Type

In the event that you need medical attention and cannot answer any questions, your emergency contact needs to know your medical history, in order to guide the medical team who may be assisting you. 

If you have allergies to foods or medications, your emergency contacts should know so that they can alert medical professionals if you are unable to do so. It is also a good idea to provide your emergency contacts with a record of your blood type in case of emergency, says Funeral Basics.

The person you select to make your medical decisions should know exactly what you want when it comes to your medical care. If you have certain preferences that need to be adhered to because of your religion, lifestyle or anything else, make sure that your emergency contact is on board and comfortable with signing off the procedure for you.
