Soft tissue injuries and how to treat them

Soft tissue refers to your muscles, tendons and ligaments. Sprains, contusions, as well as tendinitis and bursitis, are common soft-tissue injuries.  These types of injuries usually occur in the back, ankle or in the neck. When these tender body parts are overworked, their strained or damaged soft tissue can cause mild to intense pain.

Commonly, sportsmen are affected by soft tissue injuries. Particularly, runners suffer from soft tissue damage to the ankles and knees owing to excessive amounts of pressure on the joints, which receive all of the pressure and friction as their feet hit the ground.

According to The Physiotherapy Clinics, soft tissue damage can also occur from excessive overuse or chronically fatigued structures, especially muscles and tendons. For example, if you were to do a long run when already fatigued or have been exercising excessively, then you can possibly cause trauma or a strain to key running musculoskeletal structures such as your calf muscles or Achilles tendons.

How are soft tissue injuries treated?

Most of the time, the sprained muscle or ligament needs to rest. This is the most important way to regenerate. Any swelling can be treated with ice packs and cold presses, but do not put ice directly on the wound. Also, limit the amount of time that you put ice on the wound to 20 minutes per session. Prolonged exposure to ice can cause hypothermia in the wounded area.

Compression and elevation

To prevent additional swelling and blood loss, wear an elastic compression bandage, Ortho Info advises.

Elevation reduces swelling, elevate the injury on a pillow or chair. Elevation lowers the pressure in local blood vessels in the injured body part and helps oedema in the legs because it places the affected limb or limbs above the level of the heart.

Soft tissue injuries usually require a few weeks to heal, depending in the degree of the sprain or tear. Rest is usually required until normal function has returned.
